There are many great things about having a copper fire pit on your backyard patio including beauty, the taste of food when cooking, and portability. Unfortunately there are also a few disadvantages; a few problems that I have noticed with copper fire pits will be introduced in this article; solutions to these problems will also be given.
Copper fire pits can crack. The main cause of cracking is due to not properly taking care of your copper fire pit. One of the biggest pieces of advice that can be given in this respect is that you should not use cold water to put out a fire in the unit; the instant change from hot to cold can be very damaging and cause the pit to crack or chip. This can easily be prevented by having a little patience; it is best to let the fire go out on its own.
The size of fire that can be created in a copper fire pit is limited. The fire size is unfortunately limited by the size of the fire pit itself. If the unit is three feet in diameter then you can obviously only build a fire that is three feet in diameter. Make sure that you are happy with the size of the fire pit before buying it; aside from this there is really nothing that can be done. A gas patio heater may be a superior option is you are only interested in the heating aspect and do not care about fire size.
In order for a copper fire pit to stay in good condition you must take proper care of it. The debris inside the unit should be cleaned after each time that you use it. If you clean your copper fire pit on a regular basis it will be much easier than if you only clean it periodically; if this is the case then you may have to deal with debris that is stuck to the inside and hard to remove.
Copper fire pits can be expensive to purchase. I would like to reiterate a point that has already been made; do not buy a copper fire pit unless you are happy with the size and design. Also, because it is expensive it is even more important that you take good care of it.
Assuming you follow proper procedure then the benefits of investing in a copper fire pit far outweigh the costs. Good luck.
