A power rake is pretty easy to use even if you have never used them before.  It is a little bit harder than using a lawnmower but not much.  What you need to do is to turn on the machine and then find the right height.  Each lawn is different but the blades should just barely reach the surface of the soil and should be able to remove most of the thatch.  After that, make sure that you have the blades engaged as you are going over your lawn.  When you finish going over your whole lot, then you will need to stop and rake everything up and dispose of it.  It is kind of like using a vertical lawnmower.

Removing the thatch layer helps your lawn to breathe much easier. It allows aerobic bacteria to get to the surface.  If all you have left in your lawn is dead grass, it is not necessary for you to get rid of all of it with the thatcher.  Over time, the dead layers will break themselves down if they have enough access to oxygen to help them in the decaying process.

It is also a good idea to fertilize and over seed yourlawn after you are done using a lawn dethatcher or power rake .  If you decide to do both of these at the same time, you will be better off using starter fertilizer than regular fertilizer because it will not damage your seed.  The most important thing to do when you reseed the lawn is to make sure that you water it daily.  In 4 to 6 weeks, your new lawn will come in and you will have a beautiful lawn if you have done a good job power raking and overseeding.

However, you can rent a power rake for about $35-$40 for a four hour period.  A power rake will easily pull out thatch made up of dead grass, or moss from your lawn.  It is kind of like using a rake to do it while walking faster.  After you go over your lawn with a power rake, all you have left to do is to rake up the thatch and throw it in a yard waste container and will make your lawn looking neat and clean. If you want to keep your thatch problems from coming back, make sure that you have a healthy lawn.  Make sure that you fertilize your lawn on a regular basis, and also that you recede if you need to.  Another thing that you can do to help prevent thatch problems is to have your lawn aerated.  When you aerate your lawn it allows kills aerobic bacteria to help break down the layer of thatch that is developing on your lawn.  As long as you can break this layer down as fast as it can, you will never have any serious problems with thatch.
